As the sun dips below the Pacific, the Franklin Fire rages on in Malibu, California. The Entertainment Industry Foundation's Defy:Disaster program is swiftly moving into action. This program, run by the EIF, is all about giving back to the community when disaster strikes. It’s a way for people in the entertainment world and the public to show support to firefighters, first responders, and those whose lives have been upended by the fire. Nicole Sexton, the EIF's President and CEO, shared, "Our community has always stepped up during tough times. By donating to Defy:Disaster, we can back our firefighters, supply shelter and food to those in need, and take care of pets that are displaced. "
Looking back, after the Camp and Woolsey Fires in 2018, the EIF directed over $2 million to first responders and other aid groups across California. In 2020, they, along with their philanthropic partners, granted more than $14 million to over 100 organizations for disaster relief. The Franklin Fire, fueled by intense Santa Ana winds, has already scorched over 2, 800 acres since it began late on Monday night. Currently, the fire is uncontained, and officials report that only a few homes have been destroyed. The exact count isn't known yet, and no injuries have been reported so far. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
