Mass Shelters Populated as Lebanese Face New Evacuation Orders
Lebanon, BeirutFri Mar 06 2026
A surge of panic is sweeping Lebanon after Israeli forces issued urgent evacuation notices to large regions. The latest directive targets Beirut’s southern suburbs, areas under Hezbollah control, and parts of the eastern Bekaa Valley. As a result, roughly 100, 000 people have sought refuge in collective shelters across the country.
The United Nations’ humanitarian coordinator highlighted that this wave of displacement is unprecedented in scale and speed. He noted that 477 shelters are currently full, with only about 57 still able to accommodate more residents. The rapid influx is straining capacity and forcing many to move without clear destinations.
Historical context shows that during the 2024 conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, over a million people were displaced, yet most did not enter formal shelters. The coordinator warned that the current situation may see a similar pattern, with many residents remaining outside protected areas.
The chaotic movement of civilians has led to traffic gridlock and uncertainty. Authorities expect the number of displaced individuals to climb quickly as more orders are issued.
