Massachusetts: A Day of Wind, Rain, and Snow

Massachusetts is in for a wild weather ride on Sunday. It all starts with a chilly morning, but things heat up a bit as the day goes on. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for the Berkshires, with gusts that could hit 50 mph. This advisory is in effect from 9 p. m. Sunday to 9 a. m. Monday. Rain showers are expected to pop up early in the morning, especially along the south coast, Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. Temperatures will hover around the mid to upper 30s, which is good news because it means no more freezing rain. There will be a break in the rain mid-morning, but more showers are expected off the coast later in the day. Nantucket is likely to see the heaviest downpours. As the day winds down, there's a chance for snow squalls. These are expected to start in western Massachusetts around 5 p. m. and reach the Interstate 95 corridor by 9 p. m. Snow squalls can cause poor visibility and quick snow buildup, so travelers should be extra careful during the late afternoon and early evening.Strong winds will follow the snow squalls on Sunday night. Besides the Berkshires, other areas in Massachusetts can expect wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph. Northern Worcester County might see gusts of up to 40 to 45 mph. The winds will be strongest from 8 p. m. to midnight, with peak gusts happening between midnight and 6 a. m. on Monday. Breezy conditions will stick around until Monday morning, but the gusts will be less intense, around 20 to 30 mph. Springfield: High of 43°, Low of 25°, Slight chance of rain and patchy fog, then clearing. Worcester: High of 42°, Low of 23°, Slight chance of rain and patchy fog, then clearing.
