Washington DC's Mayor Muriel Bowser had a meeting with President-elect Donald Trump, and she called it "great. " This is a big change from Trump's past statements about the city. During his campaign, he threatened to take over the district because of high crime rates. But now, it seems they have found some common ground.
Bowser said they talked about making DC the best city in the world and reflecting the strength of the United States. They also discussed working together on issues like federal workforce and infrastructure. The mayor is hopeful they can keep finding common ground.
DC had a tough year in 2023 with the highest murder rate since 1997. Congress stepped in to stop a change in the city's criminal code that would have lowered penalties for certain violent crimes. But things got better in 2024 with a 32% drop in murders and a 35% drop in total violent crime.
Bowser and Trump have met before, back in 2016 before Trump's first inauguration. But their relationship hasn't always been smooth. Trump criticized Bowser for her handling of protests after George Floyd's death.
