Mayor Mamdani’s Rise Signals a Shift in American Politics

United States, USAWed Apr 22 2026
A new mayor in New York City shows that many voters are turning away from the old Republican style. The leader, who works with the state governor to add a tax on luxury second homes and plans a city grocery store, has won big support. Polls say he enjoys about 48 % approval, almost as high as the state’s governor in Maryland. People who used to think only activists liked him are now saying that “socialism” could be a good idea for the country. A survey in March found 38 % of respondents felt that way, up from only 18 % a decade ago. The reason is not that people love big government. It is because some Republicans still blame voters for their problems and refuse to listen. They think a single chart will fix everything, but that is not enough. The Republican Party has a long history of helping working people and stopping unfair power. Since Abraham Lincoln, they fought slavery and ended Jim Crow laws. The founders wanted equal chances for everyone and warned against monopolies.
Today, both parties often work with powerful groups that keep money in a few hands. These groups push rules that raise housing costs and limit new homes. Because supply is low, prices rise and many young people cannot afford to live on their own. Republicans could help by supporting policies that build more homes and keep prices fair. Instead, they have stayed silent while other politicians push big‑box rental projects that hurt families. Corporate lobbying also hurts ordinary people. In 2025, companies spent over $5 billion on lobbying to gain advantages that end up being paid for by taxpayers. A recent example is a state tax on paint that benefits a nonprofit linked to the lobbying group. When leaders like Mamdani propose bold ideas, they speak directly to everyday concerns. Republicans need to learn what a true free market looks like and work to restore it, instead of letting special interests control the game.
