A traveler from Texas may have unintentionally put many people at risk of measles during a recent trip to Massachusetts. This person, who was infected with the highly contagious virus, flew into Boston on December 11th. They stayed at a hotel in Westborough and left the state the following day.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health issued a warning to inform those who might have crossed paths with this individual. The risk of exposure was highest at the airport and the hotel on December 11th, as well as at another terminal on December 12th.
Measles is a serious concern because it spreads easily through the air. In 2025, the United States saw a significant rise in cases, with nearly 2, 000 reported across 44 jurisdictions. Sadly, three people died from the disease that year. Most of those infected were either unvaccinated or had not received both necessary doses.
Public Health Commissioner Dr. Robbie Goldstein emphasized the importance of vaccination. He noted that measles had been eliminated in the U. S. 15 years ago, but the progress is now at risk due to declining vaccination rates. Vaccines are a crucial tool in preventing the spread of measles and protecting vulnerable populations, such as young children and the elderly.
The measles vaccine is highly effective. Two doses provide 97% protection against the virus. Those who are unsure about their vaccination status should get at least one dose to stay safe.
