Measles Makes a Comeback: What's Happening in the US?

Measles is back, and it's causing trouble in two places: South Carolina and the Utah-Arizona border. In South Carolina, things are getting worse. Over the past few weeks, 27 more people got sick, making it 111 cases in just two months. More than 250 people, including kids from different schools, are stuck in quarantine. Some are even quarantined for the second time. The big problem started at a church in Inman, but it's spreading fast. Meanwhile, in Arizona and Utah, the situation is just as bad. Since August, hundreds of people have caught measles. The cities of Colorado City and Hildale are hit the hardest. In Utah, there are 115 cases so far this year. Arizona has even more, with 176 cases. This is a big deal because measles was considered gone in the U. S. since 2000. But now, cases are nearing 2, 000. Canada and the Americas recently lost their measles-free status, and the U. S. might be next. If measles keeps spreading for a year, the U. S. could lose its status too. Experts say the problem is that fewer kids are getting vaccinated. The measles vaccine is safe and works well, but some parents are choosing not to get their kids vaccinated. This is why outbreaks are happening.
