South Carolina is facing a serious measles outbreak. It has now surpassed Texas's previous record of 762 cases from last year. This is a big deal because the U. S. was declared measles-free in 2000. Now, there's a real chance that status could be lost. The outbreak started in October but has been spreading quickly. In just one month, cases jumped from 218 to 789. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 416 cases nationwide, but that number is already outdated. Measles is highly contagious. It can stay in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves. If unvaccinated people are exposed, 90% will get sick. Symptoms include high fever and a rash, but people can spread the virus even before the rash appears.
South Carolina's Public Health Department is tracking the spread. They've identified 23 schools with measles cases. In 20 of these schools, unvaccinated students have been quarantined. Additionally, eight public places, like grocery stores and a skating center, have reported exposures. Out of the 789 cases, 97% were unvaccinated or had unknown vaccination status. The measles vaccine is 97% effective and provides lifelong protection. With two doses, the vaccine can prevent most cases.
