Mental Health in Italy: A Mix of Lifestyle and Local Rules
ItalyMon Jun 22 2026
The study looks at how habits and local rules affect people’s mental well‑being in Italy from 2016 to 2023.
Researchers used simple data charts, grouping methods, and prediction tools to spot patterns and future gaps across the country’s regions.
They found that overall mental health stays fairly steady, but some areas lag behind others. The north and centre of Italy score higher than the south, although places like Calabria and Campania have shown recent gains.
Three everyday habits stand out as hurting mental health: being inactive, smoking, and having several illnesses at once.
On the flip side, eating well and spending time in city parks help keep people mentally fit.
Local rules also matter. Jobs that feel safe and courts that work quickly both help mental health, showing that the whole system of laws and places shapes how people feel.
By clustering regions based on these habits and rules, the researchers could see clear groups that share similar problems.
Their prediction model says the biggest threats to mental health are inactivity, smoking, and multiple illnesses; while having green space in the city is a strong protective factor.
The takeaway is that fixing mental health gaps needs more than just telling people to quit smoking or move.
Policymakers must also improve job security, make courts faster, build more parks, and encourage active living.
