Young people in sub-Saharan Africa often struggle to access mental health care. To understand the extent of this issue, researchers reviewed studies on five common mental disorders among youth under 19 years old. They found that many youth face challenges like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, attention problems, anxiety, and conduct disorder. The study, which included 63 studies with over 55, 000 participants, showed varying prevalence rates for each disorder. For example, around 12.
5% of youth experience PTSD, while 15. 3% deal with depression. The study also noted that the tools used to measure these disorders can affect the results. Older youth seemed to have more mental health issues, and the type of mental health disorder mattered too. The researchers stressed the need for better interventions, especially for depression and PTSD. They also pointed out that the lack of standardized tools and limited reporting on research methods could have affected the study's quality.
