Meta, the company behind Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has been shaking things up with its artificial intelligence (AI) division. The big boss, Mark Zuckerberg, brought in a young tech whiz, Alexandr Wang, to lead a new team called TBD Lab. This team is made up of some of the brightest AI minds from other big tech companies like OpenAI and Google.
The new team has its own special space in Meta's headquarters, right next to Zuckerberg's office. It's like they're in their own little world, separated from the rest of the company. This physical divide seems to have turned into a mental one too.
Word on the street is that Wang has had some disagreements with other top executives, like Chris Cox and Andrew Bosworth. These executives wanted Wang's team to use data from Instagram and Facebook to train Meta's new AI model. But Wang wasn't having it. He thinks they should focus on catching up to the AI models from their rivals first.
This disagreement shows a bigger problem at Meta. The new AI team wants to create something amazing, like a super-intelligent AI. But other parts of the company just want to use AI to make their social media platforms and ads better.
To support the AI team's goals, Meta is cutting budgets from other departments. For example, Bosworth, who oversees the virtual reality and augmented reality division, was asked to cut $2 billion from next year's budget. That money is going to Wang's team.
This power struggle raises some questions. Will the AI team's ambitions clash with the rest of the company's goals? Or will they find a way to work together? Only time will tell.
