In the early hours of Wednesday morning, a massive explosion rocked a large ammunition storage facility in Russia, sending shockwaves throughout the region. The blast, which was reportedly carried out by Ukrainian drones, set off a chain reaction of smaller explosions, engulfing the facility in flames.
The location of the attack, Toropets, is a small city in the Tver region, approximately 300 miles north of Ukraine's border. With a population of around 11,000 people, the city is home to a military unit that has been a target of Ukrainian drone strikes in the past.
According to sources, the facility, which was constructed under the supervision of former Deputy Minister of Defense, Army General Dmitry Bulgakov, who was arrested in July on fraud charges, features protection from airstrikes and nuclear blasts.
Ukraine has been stepping up its drone attacks on military sites deep inside Russian territory, although Kyiv often does not claim direct responsibility for the attacks. Newsweek has contacted the Ukrainian defense ministry for comment.
As the situation unfolded, social media users shared videos of the explosions and their aftermath, with some claiming that the facility housed thousands of tons of Russian ammunition. The governor of the Tver Region, Igor Rudenya, ordered a partial evacuation of the area near the blasts, assuring the public that the situation was under control.
The Russian Defense Ministry, however, did not mention the drones being shot down over the Tver region, instead reporting that 54 Ukrainian drones had been downed overnight over other regions.
