Milk scare in Idaho: what’s behind the raw milk illness outbreak?

Idaho, USASat Jun 06 2026
Idaho is dealing with a growing problem: nearly 60 people have fallen ill after drinking raw milk in just two weeks. The infections started showing up around May 19, and most of the sick people drank milk from two different farms in North and southern Idaho. Health officials haven’t named the farms, but they’re working with the owners to track down which batches might be unsafe. The reason they’re keeping the farms’ names private? Raw milk can be risky for anyone who handles it, not just big producers.
Raw milk doesn’t go through pasteurization, the process that kills harmful bacteria like Campylobacter, E. coli, and Salmonella. So far, 45 people tested positive for campylobacteriosis, but health experts warn that more cases could appear. Not everyone who got sick has been tested yet, so the real number might be higher. Officials are checking milk samples from six of Idaho’s seven health districts to find the source of the contamination. The symptoms from these infections aren’t pleasant: vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, and dehydration. For some groups—like young kids, pregnant women, older adults, or people with weak immune systems—the risks are even greater. Health authorities are urging anyone who feels sick after drinking raw milk to see a doctor quickly. They also want people to report any illnesses to their local health office for further investigation.
