NASA and China are both planning to set up bases on the moon. NASA's Artemis program and China's International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) aim to land astronauts at the lunar south pole. This region is special because it might have lots of water ice, which is crucial for making rocket fuel and supporting astronauts.
NASA chief Bill Nelson thinks the two countries need to chat about their plans. They need to share data and make sure their missions don't interfere with each other. So far, they haven't talked about the moon, but they have discussed avoiding collisions around Mars.
Nelson expects future talks about lunar missions. Coordinating orbits is important to prevent accidents. In case of an emergency, Nelson mentioned the Artemis Accords, which promote peaceful space exploration and helping each other out. However, different technological standards could make assisting each other tricky.
A recent test flight by SpaceX's Starship rocket is exciting news for NASA's Artemis 3 mission. This mission plans to land astronauts on the moon by 2026, but delays are possible. Nelson says SpaceX's progress looks good, which could affect the timing of Artemis 3.
