More Students Than Ever Are Studying Medicine in the U. S.

The number of students in U. S. medical schools has reached a new high. Over 100, 000 students are now studying to become doctors. This is a big deal because it shows more people want to work in healthcare. Most of these students are women. In fact, more than half of the applicants and the incoming class are women. This has been the case since 2019, and the trend is still going strong. Men are applying more too, but they are still in the minority. The students come from all over the country. California, Texas, and Florida have the most applicants. The students also come from different backgrounds. There are students from various races and ethnicities, but the number of Black men in medical school has not changed much in decades.The students are not just young either. They range in age from 18 to 60. Some are even over 30. These students are also very smart. Their average grades and test scores are high. Before starting medical school, these students did a lot of community service. They completed nearly 17 million hours of volunteer work. That's a lot of time helping others. This news shows that many people are interested in becoming doctors. It also shows that medical schools are becoming more diverse. However, there is still work to do to make sure all groups are represented equally.
