A fresh film is on the way from Taiwan’s rising director, who first wowed audiences with a boxing drama. The new project, still called “Ghostbusters Club” in early stages, promises a mix of folklore and police work that feels both familiar and daring.
The story follows Shu‑Miao, a calm spirit who runs a vegetarian noodle shop by day and performs exorcisms by night. She hears the voice of a Guanyin statue, guiding her through supernatural cases that blur belief and everyday life. Her partner is Detective Sister Ying, who is tracking a series of infant bodies hidden behind walls in upscale apartments.
The villain is a drug kingpin nicknamed “Screw. ” He uses Thai dark arts to hide structural flaws in buildings, a plot point that also comments on corruption. The film aims to show how human and divine justice can clash or cooperate.
The director’s previous work earned a Golden Horse Award for action choreography, but this thriller is a clear stylistic shift. She wants to ground ghosts in the emotional truth of her characters, creating a story that feels real even when it is supernatural.
The project will debut at Berlin’s European Film Market, where the director’s first feature also had its premiere. The market showcase is a chance for international buyers to see the new film’s potential and the director’s unique vision.
The same market also features other co‑productions, including a Japanese‑Taiwanese‑Polish drama and an animated sci‑fi anthology that explores time, technology, and alternate realities.
