Napa’s Wine Scene Shifts: A Tasting Room Closes, Spirits Rise
Petaluma, California, USA,Mon Apr 27 2026
Barber Cellars in Petaluma has announced that its downtown tasting room and cheese shop will shut down on June 5, after eleven years of serving guests with wine, food and laughter. The owners said the decision came from financial pressure in the current wine and tourism market, as well as personal health concerns. They expressed a heavy heart over closing the space that has been a gathering place for friends and families.
To ease the farewell, the shop will offer a 25 % discount on all remaining items until it closes. In its place, the Barbers plan to merge their wine business with Barber Lee Spirits, a distillery they launched in 2017 on the same street. This consolidation aims to strengthen both ventures and support the owners’ well‑being.
The new combined venue will feature cheeses, wines, spirits and desserts, with a local chocolate shop joining the lineup. Some menu items, such as fondue, will be discontinued.
The closure reflects a larger trend in Northern California’s wine industry, where economic challenges and shifting demographics are prompting many businesses to close or sell. The decline of the baby‑boomer consumer base, a key audience for wine, is contributing to the downturn.
The Barbers’ move illustrates how wineries and related businesses are adapting to survive, combining resources while still offering a curated selection of local products.
