National Symphony Boss Leaves Amid Kennedy Center Turmoil
Washington D.C., USASat Mar 07 2026
The National Symphony Orchestra’s top executive has announced her resignation, adding fresh disappointment to the Kennedy Center’s ongoing challenges. The center is already grappling with shrinking crowds, performers pulling out, and the loss of its opera wing after President Trump’s controversial involvement.
The departing director revealed she had long dreamed of leading a venue like the Wallis Annenberg Center in Beverly Hills, where she plans to start in May. She said her move, coming less than three years after taking the Kennedy job, stems from frustration with the upheaval that began when Trump declared himself chairman and installed Richard Grenell as president, even rebranding the venue.
She described the past year as “really hard” and said she began searching for a new role several months ago. Her goal had been to guide the orchestra through its centennial in 2031, a milestone she now will miss.
The resignation underscores the instability at the Kennedy Center and highlights how political shifts can ripple through cultural institutions. As audiences dwindle, artists cancel, and leadership changes, the future of this iconic venue remains uncertain.
