Earlier this year, Netflix welcomed a fresh and unique fantasy series called Dead Boy Detectives. Based on a comic book, this show follows two dead teenagers, Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, who choose to spend their afterlife helping troubled spirits among the living instead of just sleeping in their graves. These two friends form an unlikely detective agency, and along the way, they meet and help their human friends Crystal Palace and Niko, who are also dealing with their own paranormal issues. Despite its supernatural theme, the show isn't all fun and games. It dives deep into serious, real-world issues like child abuse, familicide, and narcissistic abuse.
Dead Boy Detectives uses stories of ghosts and ghouls to shed light on the trauma experienced by people in these situations. For instance, when Crystal has to face her ex-boyfriend who's become a literal demon, the show cleverly uses this to explain how someone might feel manipulated in a toxic relationship. The series also touches on heavy topics like suicide with a caring and thoughtful approach, showing a side rarely seen on television. Fans of the Sandman universe might recognize a few cameos, but the show stands strong on its own. With its eerie Tim Burton-like theme song, colorful villains, and LGBTQ+ representation, there's something in Dead Boy Detectives for everyone. Sadly, it seems Netflix hasn't given this gem the attention it deserves, and it may soon join the list of forgotten streaming shows.
