A game designer who once played professionally in the world of Magic: The Gathering is now turning a beloved fantasy universe into his own card‑based challenge. After releasing 17 expansions for his original game, a deck‑builder called Ascension, the creator is borrowing from a classic epic to launch a fresh edition that will be funded through a public campaign in July. The original game featured four broad groups – a life‑driven faction, a scholarly one, a void‑based team, and a mechanical crew. In the new version these are reimagined as elves, hobbits, humans and dwarves. Players still gather heroes and battle monsters that appear in a shared row, but the cards now echo familiar foes from the legendary saga. A revived rule lets players earn trophies by defeating certain monsters, adding a friendly rivalry reminiscent of the famed elves and dwarves.What sets this edition apart is its focus on story themes such as loyalty, moral decline and the allure of power. A “corruption” counter rises whenever a powerful eye appears on the board, and players can choose to pay the price for extra draws or other bonuses. If a character’s corruption reaches nine, an option opens to sacrifice them and wipe out all the monsters at once. These twists aim to bring dramatic moments from the books into gameplay. The design offers both competitive play and a cooperative mode where up to four players team up against an AI boss, mirroring the journey of the Fellowship. Three separate sets will cover each book in the original trilogy, and they can be mixed like a larger collection. The creator stresses that while core mechanics feel familiar to long‑time fans, the new presentation and narrative twists give it a distinct identity. The campaign will also feature a collector’s bundle with premium boxes that look like ancient tomes. Production and shipping are slated for early 2028, giving backers a chance to own a piece of the legendary world before it reaches retail shelves.
