New Design Boosts Colorful Quantum‑Dot Lights

Sat May 02 2026
Scientists have found a way to make quantum‑dot LEDs that shine brighter and last longer. The trick is to insert a special layer called a bilateral charge‑generation layer, or CGL. This layer has two parts that work together: one made from PEDOT:PSS and ZnO, the other from TAPC and HAT‑CN. By separating how electrons and holes enter the device, the CGL keeps the flow of charge balanced. The result is a dramatic jump in efficiency: red LEDs reach 30. 8% external quantum efficiency, and green ones hit 20. 1%.
In terms of light output, the red LEDs produce 40. 8 candela per ampere and the green ones 88. 1 cd A⁻¹. Longevity is also improved. The devices keep half of their brightness for about 36, 500 hours (red) and nearly 40, 000 hours (green) at a moderate brightness level. These numbers are far better than older designs that use only one charge‑generation layer. The new approach shows a clear path forward for creating brighter, more durable quantum‑dot displays and lighting panels.
