New Georgia Man Confesses to 1989 New Jersey Murder After Decades of Silence
Locust Grove, Georgia, USAThu Jun 04 2026
A man from Georgia walked into a police station in August 2024, over seven hundred miles from the crime scene, and admitted he killed a New Jersey resident in 1989. He was carrying his meds and personal items, ready for the worst. His confession came after a pastor urged him to do what he felt was right.
The victim, Mauricio Cuadra, was home with his girlfriend and her two daughters when an unknown intruder broke in. Court records show Cuadra tried to fight back with a crowbar, but the attacker overpowered him and shot him in the head. The case had been cold for more than thirty years.
The man, 62‑year‑old Joseph Quiros‑Soto, says his faith played a big part in finally speaking up. He described the attack in detail, revealing information that had never been public and could only come from someone who was there. New Jersey detectives visited him in Georgia, where he cooperated calmly and appeared remorseful.
The Georgia sheriff’s office arrested him at his home in Griffin on May 27, almost two years after he first told the story. The delay was because investigators needed time to confirm his claims and match DNA evidence. A sample from him matched a stain on the victim’s sweatpants collected in 1989.
He has been charged with murder and burglary‑related murder in New Jersey. His legal representation status is unknown, and the motive remains undisclosed as the case stays active.
