New Helipad Boosts Air‑Patient Transfers in West Texas

Lubbock, USAFri May 29 2026
UMC Health System has just opened a new double‑helipad on the corner of 8th Street and Texas Tech Parkway, right next to its main Lubbock hospital. The move replaces the old single helipad that will no longer be used. The new landing pad lets helicopters land side by side, speeding up the time it takes to move patients from across West Texas and eastern New Mexico. UMC moves about 6, 000 people by air each year, so this upgrade could save many lives.
To make the process smoother, UMC also bought a small ambulance that can ferry patients straight from the helipad to the Emergency Center. When pilots approach, they are asked to call in so staff can meet them on arrival. Security officers will drive the mini ambulance and help with the transfer. The change shows UMC’s commitment to improving emergency care in the region. By cutting wait times and making transport safer, the hospital hopes to provide quicker treatment for patients who need specialized services.
