Israel’s cabinet has just passed a new plan that will let settlers buy land more easily in the West Bank, a move Palestinians say is a step toward full annexation. The decision marks the first time since 1967 that Israel has opened a formal land‑registration process for this occupied territory. The West Bank is the main area Palestinians want to use for an independent state, but most of it remains under Israeli military rule. Only a few parts are run by the Palestinian Authority, which governs locally with limited power. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who will face elections later this year, views any Palestinian state as a threat to Israel’s security. His coalition includes several hard‑line pro‑settler ministers who want the West Bank annexed, arguing that Israel has biblical and historical rights to the land. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a far‑right figure in Netanyahu’s government, said the new policy is part of a “settlement revolution” that will strengthen Israel’s hold everywhere. Defence Minister Israel Katz added that registering land is a security measure, giving the state full control and freedom to act in the area.
The cabinet described the registration as a response to what it calls illegal Palestinian land‑registration practices, claiming it will end disputes. The Palestinian Authority rejected the move outright, calling it a “de‑facto annexation” that solidifies occupation through illegal settlements. The United States, under former President Donald Trump, has said it does not support Israeli annexation of the West Bank. However, the U. S. has not stopped Israel from expanding settlements, which Palestinians say erodes their chance at a future state by shrinking its territory. In 2024 the United Nations’ top court issued an advisory opinion stating that Israel’s occupation and settlements are illegal and should end as soon as possible. Israel disputes this, citing historical and biblical ties to the land. This new registration policy follows other measures taken earlier this month that broaden Israeli control over the West Bank.
