New Mexico’s Future: What Could Hold It Back
USASat Apr 18 2026
The state has many strengths. Beautiful landscapes, a mix of cultures and natural resources, and people who are friendly and hardworking. Because of these assets, a plan to stop progress would have to be long‑term.
One simple way to drag the state down is to ignore its problems. If leaders do nothing about crime, homelessness or bad schools, the issues will grow worse. They might claim they are working on solutions, but that would only mislead residents.
Another tactic could be to hurt the main industries. By making it hard for big companies and investors to come in, jobs would decline. Heavy taxes and strict rules could push small businesses away. Oil and gas companies might leave, and new ventures would hesitate to start.
Education could also be targeted. If the system stays weak, bright students may leave for better opportunities elsewhere. Those who stay might feel stuck and could turn to crime or give up on work.
A final strategy would be to increase reliance on state aid. Higher taxes on working families could fund benefits for others, creating a cycle where people depend on government help. Those receiving aid might feel loyal to the politicians who provide it.
Many argue that current leaders are already using these methods. They claim a different direction is needed, one that encourages growth and keeps families in New Mexico.
