A major rail tunnel project between New York and New Jersey is in trouble. The project, called Gateway, is very important for the busy train route from Boston to Washington. It is one of the biggest infrastructure projects in the country. The project has been going on for over a year. The federal government promised to give about $12 billion for it. Workers are getting ready to put together huge machines that will dig the tunnel. These machines just arrived from Germany.
But there is a problem. The money from the federal government stopped in October. This happened because the government was shut down. Officials said they need to check if the project follows new rules about businesses owned by women and minorities. The project managers said they would follow the rules, but the money has not started again.
Almost 1, 000 workers are still working on the project in Manhattan and northern New Jersey. But the managers say they can't finish by 2035 if the money doesn't come soon. At a meeting on Tuesday, the chief executive said work will stop by February 6. That's when the credit line that has kept the project going will run out.
The Gateway project is very important for the Northeast Corridor. It is a busy train route that many people use every day. If the project stops, it could cause big problems for train travel in the future. The federal government needs to make a decision soon. Otherwise, the project could be delayed for a long time.
