A New York State Police officer, Thomas Mascia, who claimed to have been shot by a suspect, is now facing charges. The 27-year-old trooper turned himself in on Monday, along with his parents. They are accused of crimes like tampering with evidence, falsely reporting a crime, and illegal gun possession. This incident happened after a widely reported manhunt in West Hempstead last fall.
Mascia had said he was shot while helping a seemingly stranded driver on Southern State Parkway. His story led to a big reward for information and a lot of attention. However, police started questioning his account and suspended him without pay. They found guns, steroids, and a large sum of money during a search of the Mascia family home. Earlier this year, Mascia also reported a hit-and-run accident, which is now being investigated as well. The District Attorney's office has a press conference planned to share more details about the case.
