New York's Suburbs Shift Right, A Warning Sign for Democrats

The once-purple suburbs of New York have turned red, and experts say this could be a sign of things to come for Democrats across the country. In the 2022 midterms, Nassau and Suffolk counties, which border New York City, saw a wave of Republican victories, with the party winning every congressional and countywide race. This dramatic shift is attributed to a combination of factors, including the perceived failures of Democratic leadership, particularly in Washington and Albany, and deep-seated concerns about crime, migrants, and the economy.
For many suburban voters, President Trump's message resonates more strongly than that of Democrats. Trump has long been critical of big government and over-regulation, and his supporters see him as a champion of law and order. Furthermore, Trump's Justice Department has taken steps to combat violent crime, including the MS-13 gang that has plagued Long Island. The Suffolk Police Benevolent Association, the first police organization in New York to endorse Trump's re-election bid, credits him with making it a priority to tackle this issue.
The shift in suburban politics is not limited to New York. Nationwide, polls show that suburban voters are increasingly wary of progressive policies, such as cashless bail and open borders. These concerns are fueled by a growing sense of unease about the direction of the country, with high inflation, geopolitical tensions, and economic uncertainty all taking their toll.
Expert Melissa DeRosa, a top adviser to former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, believes that Long Island's shift to the right could be a harbinger for similar communities across the country. "Suburbs, in general, traditionally are purple," she explains. "They can swing in either direction, and I think women in the suburbs in particular have a lot of voting power in the electorate. When I look at Long Island, and you see this encroachment in the last couple of years, where it's gone completely red, even under a good scenario for us in terms of the lines being drawn, I think it's a real wake-up call.
