New Zealand Boosts Defense with $1. 5 Billion Helicopter Deal
New Zealand, Wellington, New ZealandSat Jun 06 2026
The United States has cleared a $1. 5 billion contract for five MH‑60R Seahawk helicopters to New Zealand, a move that fits into the country’s plan to almost double its defense budget over the next eight years.
This purchase, supplied by Lockheed Martin’s Sikorsky division, will give Wellington a modern fleet of maritime aircraft that can be used for patrol, search‑and‑rescue, and other missions around its waters.
New Zealand’s government recently earmarked NZ$1. 58 billion (about $916 million) for defense upgrades, signaling a strong commitment to strengthening its military capabilities.
The sale is part of a broader strategy by New Zealand’s centre‑right administration to increase spending by NZ$9 billion ($5 billion) over four years, aiming for 2 % of GDP in defense spend by 2032.
Washington’s approval comes amid a U. S. push for allies in Europe and the Asia‑Pacific to step up defense budgets, especially as China’s military presence grows.
By acquiring the Seahawk helicopters, New Zealand expects to enhance its ability to protect key infrastructure and respond more effectively to future security challenges.
The deal also reflects the close ties between New Zealand and Australia, both of which are expanding their roles in East Asian security affairs.
The State Department highlighted that the new aircraft will improve homeland defense and support New Zealand’s role in regional stability.
