Nichols College steps in as Anna Maria shuts down

Dudley, Massachusetts, USAFri May 29 2026
A big fire science school in New England recently found a new home after its original college decided to close down. Anna Maria College had been running the region’s largest fire science program for decades. But when the college announced it would shut its doors after 80 years, students and staff needed a quick solution. Nichols College, just over 20 miles away, decided to take in these programs instead of letting them disappear. Not every college that shuts down manages to save its academic offerings. Some students lose credits or have to start over completely. Here, Nichols is trying to avoid that problem. The school will accept Anna Maria fire science students automatically if they’re doing well in their classes. It will also match their existing grants up to $32, 000 and guarantee campus housing. Around 150 undergraduates and 80 grad students in emergency-related programs now have a clear path to finish their degrees.
The move raises questions about why some small colleges struggle while others grow. Nichols has a larger endowment, more applicants, and a history of expanding programs that students actually want. Anna Maria’s endowment was tiny by comparison, and its enrollment had been dropping. Critics might ask whether small colleges are doomed if they can’t keep attracting enough students. Others might argue that competition among colleges is normal and that students will always have options. Faculty members are also part of the transition. Nichols plans to hire a few former Anna Maria fire science professors as full-time staff and bring in some as part-time teachers. This helps keep the program’s quality intact and reassures students that their education won’t just disappear. Sports teams and clubs are reaching out too, ready to help athletes and other students keep up with activities they started at Anna Maria. At the end of the day, Nichols isn’t just offering a new mailing address. The college is betting that by taking over these programs, it can strengthen its own reputation in public safety education. With more students applying and enough funding to support them, the plan looks promising. Yet bigger questions remain: Can Nichols pull this off smoothly? Will other struggling schools follow the same path? The answers will shape the future of small colleges across the region.
