Nippon Ichi Software Struggles with Money Problems
JapanWed May 20 2026
A major Japanese game company is facing tough times. Instead of making profits like it used to, it ended up losing money again this year. Sales dropped a lot because fewer new games and extra content were bought by players. The company released a few games in Japan and some other countries, but none of them became big hits.
Even though the main business isn’t doing well, the company tried to grow in other ways. It sold digital copies of older games and added extra downloadable content. It also tested new ideas like running a card game shop and licensing its characters for other products. These efforts helped a little, but not enough to cover the losses.
The company’s student housing business did better this year, making more money than before. But that wasn’t enough to balance out the problems in its main game division. Because of this, the company still ended up with a big loss, even after accounting for unusual expenses like retirement benefits for executives.
Even with all these money troubles, the company decided to pay the same small dividend to its shareholders as last year. It wants to keep investors happy, even if it means less money stays in the company’s accounts. Looking ahead, the company hopes to bounce back next year by releasing new games and expanding into other markets.
For now, the company is working on several new projects. Some of these games will come out soon in different countries, while others are still in development. The company is taking a risk by depending on these new releases to turn things around, but success isn’t guaranteed.
