North Idaho College Experiences a Surge in Enrollment: A Revival of Career and Technical Education

North Idaho College (NIC) is experiencing a remarkable revival as enrollment numbers reach a decade-long high. With a 7% increase in overall enrollment compared to last year, NIC is welcoming 2,914 students this fall, up from 2,717 in 2021. This growth is particularly noteworthy in the career and technical education (CTE) sector, where 179 first-time, degree-seeking students have enrolled, a significant increase from the 141 students enrolled during the same period last year. The CTE programs, such as welding, diesel technology, and HVAC, have reached full capacity, with 24, 17, and 14 students, respectively. The nursing program has a full cohort of 40 students, and the radiography technology program has filled its 10-student cohort. The graphic design program has even opened a second cohort due to high demand.NIC administrators are optimistic, predicting that this could be the first overall enrollment increase, excluding dual credit numbers, since Fall 2011. This growth is attributed to the hard work and dedication of NIC employees, as well as the college's reputation for providing quality education and diverse opportunities. Summer enrollment has also increased by 16%, with 1,091 students enrolled in late June, taking a combined 5,042 credits. Morgan Ahrens, a 21-year-old student from Pueblo, Colorado, is among those who chose NIC for its beautiful campus and the competitive physical therapist assistant program. The NIC Workforce Training Center in Post Falls has seen a similar surge, with an 8. 9% increase in enrollments from fiscal year 2023 to fiscal year 2024. Vicki Isakson, the dean of instruction for workforce education, attributes this growth to state LAUNCH funding, increased outreach, greater marketing, and the collective efforts of many. Although many classes are full, NIC still offers multiple start dates for accelerated courses.
