In a striking turn of events, Ukraine has reportedly attacked North Korean troops stationed in Russia's Kursk region. The troops were disguised in Russian uniforms and hit during an artillery strike, marking a new phase in the ongoing conflict. Daily skirmishes have since occurred around the town of Sudzha, held by Ukraine.
According to Andrii Kovalenko, the head of Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation, the engagement was an ordinary combat operation. Ukrainian forces identified the enemy positions and launched a strike, targeting a mix of Russian and North Korean troops. This wasn't an isolated incident; battles now occur daily in the area.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed that North Korean soldiers, estimated to number around 11, 000, have already suffered losses in Kursk. These soldiers are reportedly given a few weeks of training before being deployed to live combat positions. The presence of these troops presents a significant threat that requires additional resources from Ukrainian forces.
Some North Korean soldiers are also being trained to use reconnaissance and strike drones, which could pose a future risk to South Korea. Once back in North Korea, these trained soldiers could potentially use their new skills in border areas with South Korea.
The military partnership between Russia and North Korea has been described as mutually beneficial. However, logistical challenges arise from combining two militaries, such as language barriers and potential racism from Russian troops. Additionally, North Korean officials closely supervise their soldiers to prevent desertion.
Ukrainian intelligence has shared details about the equipment given to North Korean troops, including mortars, rifles, machine guns, and anti-tank missiles. Intercepted audio also suggests a chaotic start to integrating North Korean troops into Russia's fight.
