North Korea’s Young Generation: The Government’s Key Players in War and Control

Pyongyang, North KoreaSun May 03 2026
In Pyongyang last week, North Korea wrapped up a major youth conference with flashy parades and speeches, showing how much the government relies on young people to push its agenda. The event, called the Eleventh Congress of the Socialist Patriotic Youth League, happens every five years and targets citizens aged 14 to 30. Leaders made it clear that this generation isn’t just the future—they’re the backbone of the country’s policies, both at home and abroad. Kim Jong Un, the country’s leader, stood before the delegates and called them the "vanguard" of the nation’s goals. He pushed for stronger discipline and tighter control within the youth league, framing it as the driving force for carrying out the ruling party’s decisions. The message was clear: young people must follow the rules without question. After the speeches, Kim even joined the crowd for a group photo, a move that reinforces his image as a leader deeply connected to the younger generation.
But the government didn’t stop at speeches. A recent letter from the ruling Workers' Party linked the loyalty of young North Koreans directly to the country’s military actions in Ukraine. It praised young soldiers sent to fight as "bombs and flames" defending the nation’s honor. This comes after reports from South Korea, Ukraine, and Western officials estimated that around 14, 000 North Korean troops were deployed in Russia’s Kursk region, with over 6, 000 reported dead. The push for youth engagement isn’t just about war—it’s also about controlling how young people think. The government has cracked down hard on outside cultural influences, especially anything from South Korea, like music, movies, or even slang. For North Korea, exposure to these ideas is seen as a threat to its strict control over society. Meanwhile, Kim Jong Un has been spotted in public more often with his young daughter, Ju Ae, at major events, possibly to shape a softer image of leadership while keeping tight control over the next generation.
