North Texas airports had a rough day on Thursday. DFW and Dallas Love Field saw more than a thousand flights delayed or canceled. This was all thanks to some heavy rain and thunderstorms that rolled in.
DFW Airport, which is a big deal for American Airlines, had nearly 900 delays and over 300 cancellations. Meanwhile, Dallas Love Field, home to Southwest Airlines, had about 220 delays and 60 cancellations. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stepped in and issued a ground delay for both airports. This means flights heading to North Texas were stuck on the ground at their departure points.
The average delay at DFW was around 165 minutes, and it was getting better. At Love Field, flights were delayed by about 177 minutes. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Fort Worth issued a flash flood warning for Dallas. This warning was in effect until 2:45 p. m. The NWS said that thunderstorms would keep going through the afternoon and night. They also warned about heavy rain, possible flooding, and even some severe weather.
So, why did this happen? Well, it's all about the weather. Thunderstorms can cause a lot of problems for airports. They can make it hard for planes to take off and land safely. This is why the FAA issued the ground delay. It's a way to keep everyone safe.
But what does this mean for travelers? Well, it means a lot of frustration and delays. People had to wait around for their flights, and some even had to cancel their plans. It's a reminder that weather can have a big impact on air travel. So, next time you're planning a trip, make sure to check the weather forecast.
