North Texas is experiencing a heatwave that's breaking norms for early January. The National Weather Service predicts Tuesday's high will hit 76 degrees, a full 20 degrees above the average for this time of year. While it's warm, it's not quite record-breaking yet. The hottest January 6th was back in 1982, when temperatures soared to 79 degrees.
The warmth isn't just for the day. Evenings are also unseasonably mild, with lows around 46 degrees. That's still 10 degrees higher than usual. Wednesday looks similar, with highs around 78 degrees, which could also flirt with record highs.
Rain might make an appearance on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning. However, these showers aren't expected to be intense. There's a 30% chance of scattered showers in the core counties of North Texas. If more than a tenth of an inch of rain falls at DFW International Airport, it will be the most rain the region has seen since November 30th.
The warm spell is expected to last through Thursday and Friday. But a cold front is on the way, bringing temperatures back to more typical January levels.
Let's break down the forecast:
- Tuesday: Mostly sunny with near-record warmth. Lows around 55 degrees, highs near 77. Winds from the west at 5-10 mph.
- Wednesday: Partly to mostly cloudy and mild. Lows around 50 degrees, highs near 78. Winds from the south at 5-10 mph.
- Thursday: Partly to mostly cloudy with a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Lows around 60 degrees, highs near 72. Winds from the southwest at 10-15 mph.
- Friday: Partly sunny with a 20% chance of rain. Lows around 50 degrees, highs near 64. Winds from the west-northwest at 10-15 mph.
While the warmth is unusual, it's a reminder of how unpredictable weather can be. It's always a good idea to stay prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws our way.
