Nuclear power gear in India gets past taxes backdated
New Delhi, IndiaSat Jun 13 2026
India just made a rule change that could save nuclear plants money on old purchases. The finance ministry decided to cancel customs taxes on parts bought between April 2019 and January 2026 for building or running nuclear reactors. This decision surprises some because it works backwards—covering bills that were already paid.
A few months ago in the budget, the government already said no taxes on these imports until 2035. Now they’re stretching that rule to cover earlier years too. The move suggests the government wants to push nuclear power as a clean energy option but may not have planned carefully how the money would balance out.
Not everyone agrees this is smart. Some experts ask why companies should get refunds on taxes they already paid without knowing the rules would change. Others wonder if this will really speed up new nuclear projects or just help a few companies save cash.
The change also raises questions about fairness. If taxes get wiped for nuclear gear, why not for solar or wind parts? It could signal that nuclear energy gets special treatment even as cheaper renewables grow faster.
