The United States and Iran recently had a heated discussion at the United Nations Security Council. The main topic was how to restart talks about Iran's nuclear program. The US said they are ready to talk directly with Iran, but only if Iran is willing to have serious discussions. The US also made it clear that they do not want Iran to enrich uranium on its own soil. This is because the US and other Western countries are worried that Iran could use enriched uranium to make nuclear weapons.
Iran, however, disagrees with the US's conditions. Iran's ambassador to the UN said that the US is not being fair by insisting on a policy that bans uranium enrichment. Iran argues that as a member of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, it has the right to enrich uranium. Iran also said that it will not give in to pressure or threats from the US.
The US and Iran have had five rounds of talks before, but they did not make much progress. One of the main issues was uranium enrichment. The US and its allies want Iran to stop enriching uranium, but Iran refuses to do so.
Recently, the UN reinstated an arms embargo and other sanctions on Iran. This happened after European powers accused Iran of violating a 2015 deal that was supposed to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons. The deal is part of a UN Security Council resolution. The council has been meeting twice a year to discuss the implementation of this resolution.
Not all countries agree with the sanctions. Russia and China, for example, disputed the move. They also objected to the recent meeting at the UN Security Council, but the meeting went ahead as planned.
