One‑Third of U. S. Families Sacrifice Daily Needs to Pay Health Bills

A recent survey of almost 20, 000 adults across the country revealed that about one out of every three people reduced spending on essentials like food and utilities to cover medical costs in 2025. The study, carried out between June and August, shows that this trend is especially pronounced among those without health insurance. Two‑thirds of uninsured respondents said they had to cut back, with one third borrowing money and nearly a quarter extending their medication schedules.
Even people who do have insurance are feeling the pinch. Nearly 30 % of insured participants admitted to making at least one sacrifice, reflecting rising premiums and out‑of‑pocket expenses. The expiration of pandemic‑era subsidies in many Affordable Care Act plans has left millions with higher bills.
Health experts point to a worrying pattern: as medical costs climb, reports of chronic conditions such as metabolic disease and mental health issues are also rising. This suggests that the nation is not getting healthier, but rather facing a dual challenge of worsening health and escalating expenses.
A related survey of 5, 660 adults found that nearly one in ten delayed major life decisions because of healthcare costs. These include postponing retirement, changing jobs, buying a home, or taking vacations. The data underline how medical spending can derail personal plans and financial stability.
The findings highlight a growing squeeze on households, where the need to pay for health care forces people to cut back on other important needs and delay life‑changing events.
