Europe's online learning scene, especially MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), is set to explode. By 2030, it could hit a massive $25. 46 billion, up from $5. 22 billion in 2025. That's a whopping 37. 3% growth each year, thanks to AI and machine learning making learning more personal and adaptable.
MOOCs are everywhere in Europe. Universities, schools, and even companies are using them for everything from master's degrees to quick certifications. Take, for example, the EUNICE partnership, where seven European universities teamed up to launch a new MOOC on global studies in 2022. The European MOOC Consortium (EMC) is also pushing digital learning by integrating MOOCs into university business models.
But it's not all smooth sailing. Creating MOOCs and maintaining platforms is expensive. Plus, there are concerns about staff needing digital skills and keeping student data safe. COVID-19 did give MOOCs a big boost, though. People turned to online learning for career changes and extra skills, making the post-pandemic market for online education boom.
The UK is a hotspot for MOOC growth. Universities there are jumping on the online bandwagon, using MOOCs for degrees and micro-credentials. The London School of Economics, for instance, has launched online programs, reaching more students and boosting its brand. Data shows more people are choosing distance learning, which is great for the market.
The European MOOC market has some big players like Coursera, FutureLearn, and OpenupEd. In 2022, Global University Systems bought FutureLearn to boost its AI-driven career solutions. IE University also hit a million enrollments on Coursera, showing just how popular MOOCs are becoming.
