Only a handful of EU countries push firms toward electric company cars
European UnionMon Jun 01 2026
Out of 27 European Union nations, fewer than one in three helps businesses switch their work fleet to electric power. That’s according to fresh figures released recently. Many firms still buy gas or diesel cars because clear perks—like tax breaks or cash grants—are missing in most capitals. Without those carrots, company vehicles, which drive far more mileage than private cars, keep burning fossil fuels and pump out extra carbon.
Company cars dominate the market; they make up around six in ten new car registrations across the EU. Yet these cars are used much harder than family vehicles before they get sold second-hand. The question is simple: if most wheels on the road belong to companies, why doesn’t every government sweeten the deal for electric choices? Some nations do offer incentives, but the club remains small and scattered.
The gap isn’t just paperwork. Once these gas-guzzling vans and sedans hit the second-hand lane, they lock in higher emissions for years. Meanwhile, countries that already reward electric fleets see bigger cuts in city pollution. It’s a chance most EU states have yet to grab.
