OpenAI Will Let the U. S. Check Its AI Before Launch
London, United KingdomFri Jun 05 2026
OpenAI has agreed to let the U. S. government review its AI systems before they hit the market, following a new executive order from President Trump.
The company said it will sign up for the voluntary rule, saying that governments should help decide how powerful AI tools are used.
During a talk at SXSW London, the company’s head of international work explained that OpenAI feels its duties are serious and that it has already been offering ways for governments worldwide to monitor safety concerns.
Trump’s order, signed on Tuesday, requires firms to share their models with the government 30 days ahead of release and to participate in tests that measure advanced cyber abilities.
These tests will decide if a model qualifies as a “covered frontier model, ” which would bring it under stricter oversight.
The OpenAI official, who once served as the U. K. ’s foreign secretary, warned that rules must be smart and flexible, suggesting that future regulatory bodies should keep room to adapt.
He added that while governments need strong control, they also must avoid over‑regulation that could stifle innovation.
The move reflects a broader debate about how to balance rapid AI progress with public safety and national security concerns.
