Parents Face New Charges Over Teen Trouble
Washington, D.C., USATue May 19 2026
In Washington, D. C. , a new policy says parents can be held responsible if they help their kids break the law.
The change is part of a tougher approach to teen crime that started on Friday when federal officials announced they would actively pursue parents under the city’s curfew rules.
The law says adults may not let a minor do bad things or help them do it, so prosecutors can now bring cases against parents connected to recent teenage disturbances.
One example that drew a lot of attention was a fight at a Chipotle in the Navy Yard area.
That event, which went viral on social media, came just before the new policy was revealed.
Experts say it is not clear if making parents criminally liable actually stops teen crime.
Professor Eve Brank, who studies parental responsibility laws, told a news interview that research is still weak.
She explained that proving a parent knowingly helped a child break the law can be hard in court.
Brank also noted that as kids grow older, friends become more important than parents.
She said teenagers often blame peer pressure for their actions rather than their guardians.
Instead of punishment, Brank argues that offering teens fun and constructive activities can reduce bad behavior better than strict penalties.
She warned that the new law might hurt single parents or guardians who are already stretched thin trying to watch their teens.
These families could face legal trouble even if they are doing everything possible to keep their kids safe.
Many teens interviewed in court said they felt they were the ones who should be held accountable, not their parents.
The city’s leaders and police have been focusing on juvenile crime after several large teen gatherings in public places.
The new policy does not yet name any parents for prosecution, but officials say they are ready to act if the law is broken.
