Passengers speak up after cruise ship faces virus scare
Cape VerdeThu May 07 2026
Three people lost their lives after catching a rare virus on a luxury cruise ship near Antarctica, sparking fear and frustration among passengers. The MV Hondius, carrying travelers from over 20 countries, became the center of a crisis when hantavirus cases appeared. Some who were stuck on board shared raw emotions online, while others tried to stay calm.
A travel blogger from America, Jake Rosmarin, used TikTok to express how hard it was for those stranded. "We’re real people with families waiting for us, " he said, highlighting the human side of the situation. Others, like travel influencer Kasem Hato, painted a different picture, calling the panic exaggerated. He mentioned how most people kept their usual routines, reading books and watching movies, stating the situation was under control.
The cruise started in Argentina with plans to visit remote spots like Antarctica and the Falkland Islands. But after the outbreak, the ship rerouted to Cape Verde, where officials refused to let anyone leave. Quarantine on a moving ship added stress, especially when news spread of the deaths. One Belgian passenger, Helene Goessaert, mentioned the shock of losing fellow travelers, saying, "You don’t board a ship expecting such tragedy. "
Medical help arrived when three people were flown to the Netherlands, including the ship’s doctor. But now, the ship faces another hurdle: where can it dock? Spain’s national government said yes to docking in the Canary Islands, but local leaders opposed it, calling the decision unsafe. This clash left everyone in limbo.
Health experts insist the risk to the public is low. The World Health Organization confirmed only eight cases, but three turned fatal. Strangely, hantavirus usually spreads through rats, yet this outbreak hints at possible person-to-person transmission in rare cases. The first death was a 70-year-old Dutch man, followed by his wife who passed away mid-flight home. A German traveler became the third victim days later.
Governments are stepping in, with Britain’s leader pledging support for citizens stuck on board. Meanwhile, passengers are left juggling fear, uncertainty, and the struggle to return home safely.
