Patient Faces New Challenges After ICU Stay

Pittsburgh, USASat Apr 04 2026
A serious car crash in Pittsburgh on November 16 left a 63‑year‑old lawyer, about to retire, in critical condition. While driving, he suffered a heart attack, lost control of the vehicle and hit a guardrail. Passersby broke his car window and pulled him out, and a volunteer firefighter performed CPR until emergency services arrived. He was taken to U. P. M. C. Mercy Hospital where he spent 18 days in the ICU, 14 of those on a ventilator. During this time he developed delirium, requiring antipsychotic medication, and even with a feeding tube his weight fell. His family was uncertain if he would recover.
After being discharged on February 1, he returned home surrounded by family. With the help of multiple therapists, he has begun to walk again, can dress himself and has seen his speech improve. Yet the most troubling issue is memory loss; he forgets conversations from hours earlier and struggles with simple tasks like using a microwave or making a phone call. A recent cognitive screen showed impaired memory and signs of depression. Despite the setbacks, he says he feels “much, much better than I was, ” though he misstated his age during a recent interview. The journey to full recovery has only just begun, and ongoing support will be essential.
