Peace Deal Sent to Congress: What It Means for U. S. and Iran
Washington, USAFri Jun 19 2026
The White House forwarded a document to lawmakers that outlines an interim agreement between the United States and Iran. The paper was sent after President Trump signed a temporary deal with Tehran, ending hostilities for the time being.
The agreement is titled “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America. ” It declares that military actions on all fronts, including in Lebanon, will stop immediately and permanently.
A key part of the deal is that Washington will lift its naval blockade on Iranian ports within a month. In return, Iran promises to let commercial ships pass safely through the Strait of Hormuz for two months without paying extra fees.
Both sides have pledged to work toward a final, long‑term agreement within sixty days. If needed, they can agree to extend that period later on.
The document carries signatures from representatives of Iran and the United States, with Pakistan acting as a witness and mediator.
This step shows that both countries are ready to move forward, at least temporarily, while they negotiate the details of a more permanent settlement.
