Peru’s Big Ballot: A 35‑Candidate Showdown
Lima, PeruSat Apr 11 2026
The election in Peru is set to be the most confusing one yet for its 27 million voters. Thirty‑five people are running for president, a record that shows how unstable the country’s politics have become. Voters will need to choose from a huge ballot that shows each candidate’s picture and party symbol, a system used because many people have trouble reading.
Most of the candidates are unknown. They each get less than one percent of support in polls. Even those who have names people recognize are not gaining traction. Because no candidate has a clear lead, a second‑round vote in June is almost guaranteed.
The front runner is Keiko Fujimori. She is the daughter of a former dictator who was once accused of many crimes. Keiko tries to balance using her father’s name for recognition while saying she is different from him. Her support hovers around ten percent in surveys, but many voters refuse to give her a chance. She has been the main figure in Peru’s political turmoil for years, having run for president four times and reached a runoff three times. She could lose again in the final round.
Other contenders have small chances of making it to a second vote. Rafael Lópeza Aliaga, the former mayor of Lima, is known for extreme right views and has made threats against election officials. Carlos Álvarez, a former ally of Keiko, is more famous for jokes than real policies. Ricardo Belmont, a senior left‑wing politician, has made many offensive comments about women and minorities.
Surveys show that most Peruvians want new leaders who are not connected to the current congress. They blame corruption and crime for the country’s problems, including a high murder rate and widespread hunger. The public is angry at politicians who they feel enrich themselves while the people suffer.
If a new leader is elected, he or she will need to tackle serious issues such as organized crime and poverty. The people expect a leader who can bring real change, not just more of the same old politics.
