PETA’s New Instagram Push: A Weird Mix of Veganism and Identity Labels
Washington, DC, USAWed Apr 15 2026
PETA’s youth wing, known as PETA2, has posted a controversial Instagram story that mixes animal rights with very specific identity and kink tags. The images look like AI‑generated prompts, asking for a “bisexual vegan boy, ” a “dom vegan girl, ” and a “submissive non‑binary vegan. ” The aim, according to the group, is to reach teens as young as 13.
PETA2 already has more than 200, 000 followers and often blends animal welfare messages with progressive social causes. This particular post received over 500 likes but no comments by the next day, suggesting it may have missed its mark.
The campaign is not the first time PETA has ventured into LGBTQ territory. A past effort featured transgender model Carmen Carrera in a “Transform Your Wardrobe” ad, where she appeared nude behind colored censor bars. Despite these moves, PETA’s leader has repeatedly denied that the organization is “lefty, ” insisting its focus is purely on animal cruelty.
Critics point out that PETA’s actions sometimes contradict its stated neutrality. For example, the group publicly criticized the White Coat Waste Project—a bipartisan watchdog that has successfully reduced federal animal testing—calling it a “young‑male‑testosterone energy” organization. While White Coat Waste has achieved concrete wins, PETA’s own record on animal testing is less clear.
Instead of concentrating on measurable victories like ending primate research at the Veterans Affairs Department or closing large FDA labs, PETA appears to be courting niche identity groups to stay relevant among Gen Z and Alpha audiences. The blend of veganism with specific sexual identities feels more like a gimmick than serious advocacy, raising questions about the organization’s priorities and effectiveness.
