Pete Alonso, the power-hitting first baseman, is set to join the Baltimore Orioles after agreeing to a five-year, $155 million deal. This move comes just a day after the Orioles missed out on another top free agent, Kyle Schwarber. Alonso's contract includes no deferrals or opt-outs, and he gets a limited no-trade clause.
Alonso's decision to leave the Mets is the second major departure from the team in as many days, following Edwin Diaz's move to the Dodgers. The Orioles have been looking to strengthen their lineup, and Alonso fits the bill. He's known for his consistent power, hitting at least 34 home runs every full season since his debut in 2019.
Last year, Alonso had a bit of a down season, but he bounced back in 2025 with 38 home runs and improved his strikeout rate. His strong finish to the season helped him secure this lucrative deal. The Mets, however, were only interested in a short-term deal, which likely contributed to Alonso's decision to move on.
The Orioles have been busy this offseason, also acquiring outfielder Taylor Ward, who hit 36 home runs in 2025. These additions should help the Orioles improve their performance against left-handed pitching. The team's payroll is manageable, with only a few players signed beyond the 2026 season, so they can still make more moves.
Alonso's contract is the second-largest in Orioles history, behind only the deal given to Chris Davis. This move could be a big step for the Orioles, but they still have work to do to improve their rotation and bullpen.
