Planning for DeKalb's train connection: what you need to know
DeKalb, Illinois, USAFri Apr 17 2026
The city of DeKalb is taking another step toward bringing train service to its residents. Instead of just talking about it for years, leaders finally agreed to hire a company that will study whether a commuter rail system makes sense. The plan involves checking safety, environmental effects, and how well the new service would connect to buses and other transit options. The big question remains: can DeKalb handle the growth in bus riders that jumped from about 3, 100 in 2019 to nearly 43, 000 in 2025?
So far, the city has only looked at bus usage—not trains. The latest study will dig deeper into costs, land use, and how the rail could fit into the bigger picture of Illinois transit plans. A local alderman compared waiting too long to missing out on funding, saying "you don’t wait while it’s hot. " The city is banking on a half-million-dollar state grant to cover most of the study, with DeKalb pitching in $100, 000 of its own money.
But is this really the best use of resources? Some argue that funding a new study might not be enough if the larger transit system isn’t ready for it. Others point out that past plans have stalled before, raising doubts about whether this one will actually lead to real train tracks. The city says the rail could help with economic growth, but without clear details on how, skepticism remains.
